What is lead white? Origin and etymology
Lead white is the oldest artificial white pigment used in ancient China. As its name suggests, it was made from the metal lead.
The manufacturing process involved placing thin flakes of lead in a pot and exposing them to steam rising from vinegar placed below. The white powder produced on the surface of the lead through this chemical reaction is the lead white pigment. This pigment, produced using this method, is also known as "gofun" in Japan.
Furthermore, when used especially in cosmetics, it was sometimes referred to by the elegant alternative name "enka" (lead oxide). Its pure and smooth whiteness was difficult to obtain with other natural white pigments, making it a highly valuable color for ancient people.
Historical background of lead white
The use of lead white is very ancient, with some theories suggesting it dates back to the Yin dynasty. During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, it was already widely used as face powder among aristocratic women.
During the Han Dynasty, its popularity increased even further, and it became an indispensable item in women's makeup. In the Tang Dynasty, a makeup technique called the "three whites method," which emphasized the whiteness of the forehead, nose, and chin, became popular, and lead white was consumed in large quantities. It is said that Yang Guifei also favored this makeup that emphasized whiteness.
However, behind its beauty lay the danger of lead toxicity. Long-term use could harm health, and in later generations, safer alternatives such as "clam shell powder" made from clam shells became increasingly used.
Lead in Chinese Art and Crafts
In the field of art, lead white was an indispensable element. Especially in figure painting, particularly in the delicate art of meticulous brushwork, it was frequently used to depict the smoothness of skin and the soft texture of clothing. Its strong opacity offered the advantage of retaining its whiteness even when other colors were layered on top.
Lead white also played an important role in the world of ceramics. As a component of white porcelain glaze and as a white pigment in overglaze decoration such as polychrome, it gave works of art purity and splendor.
In clothing culture, pure white, like lead white, was considered a symbol of nobility, purity, and sometimes even sanctity. The white seen in Hanfu and silk fabrics is thought to represent not only the natural color of the undyed fabric itself, but also the ideal shade of lead white.
